VTN Architects (Vo Trong Nghia Architects) win Civic Building of the year 2019_Viettel Academy Educational Centre
08/02/2020
Winner: Civic building of the year 2019. Viettel Academy is an educational centre within a training campus near Hanoi, Vietnam by Vo Trong Nghia Architects.
The campus provides short-term accommodation and training courses for the staff of Vietnamese telecommunications group Viettel. With a cooling microclimate, the campus buildings are surrounded by lakes and abundant green space. The educational centre consists of 12 blocks, ranging from two to five storeys high, accommodating classrooms, meeting rooms, halls, and offices. These blocks are connected by multi-level circulation paths, offering views and quiet areas for studying, and are surrounded by a pool, which helps to regulate its microclimate.
A lightweight concrete roof covers the majority of semi-outdoor spaces, sheltering them from rain and limiting direct sunlight, whilst also functioning as skywalk. The centre’s central location within the campus makes it accessible from the housing and other facilities. The project has been designed to create a quiet and peaceful space for the Viettel trainees to focus on their studies away from the nearby busy city.
Judges comments: Judges said that this project is “incredibly experiential, and architecturally very clever and well-calibrated”. They also added that the “juxtaposition of circulation, courtyard and building is very well articulated,” and that it’s “simply great architecture”.

08/02/2020
VTN Architects has won three Green Good Design 2019 awards from the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The designs by our company include Phan Kế Bính House (Breathing house) built in HCM City in 2016, Nocenco Café in the central city of Vinh in 2017, and Bamboo Stalactite Pavilion in Venice, Italy in 2017.
According to the organisers, this is the 11th year the institutions had developed this very specialised edition of the original Good Design programme, which was founded in Chicago in 1950 and is the oldest and most important awards programme in the world.

VTN Architects (Vo Trong Nghia Architects) win Architect of the year 2019
08/02/2020
Winner: Architect of the year 2019. VTN Architects (Vo Trong Nghia Architects) is a Vietnamese studio that was founded in 2006.
The practice, which has offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, works internationally on cultural, commercial, and residential projects.
VTN Architects’ work pursues new methods in sustainable architecture whilst maintaining Asian architectural traditions. Its work responds to Vietnam as a rapidly developing nation and recognizes the needs that this growth demands in a conscious and sustainable manner. The studio aims to use natural energy and local materials in all of their projects.
Recent projects include a series of six triangular concrete pavilions connected by a low block of office spaces for the Vietnamese telecommunications group Viettel, which has also been shortlisted in the civic building category.
Judges comments: “The studio has an acute awareness of the context that it is working in. Vietnam’s past is very much present in the work but it also recognizes the modernity of the country. Vo Trong Nghia’s projects signify a transition from old to new. The studio has developed its own school of thought and its own techniques.”
